2016 Moynihan Prize Lecture featuring Ron Haskins & Isabel Sawhill May 12, 1:30pm – 3pm
The Moynihan Prize is awarded each year by The American Academy of Political and Social Science, which is dedicated to the use of social science to address important social problems. In this era of stark political divisions, the 2016 Moynihan Prize will be awarded to two individuals who have spent their careers focused on putting strong social policy ahead of partisan differences. Dr. Ron Haskins and Dr. Isabel Sawhill have worked together for decades to help reframe the debate about poverty and inequality, focusing on child well-being, healthy families and social mobility.The event will conclude with a discussion on the use of social science in public policymaking and wrap up with audience Q&A. Please join us for this engaging event.

D.C. Meditates  May 21, 4pm – 6pm
You are invited to attend D.C. Meditates on the National Mall hosted by The Mindfulness Center, BuddhaFest, and Natural Awakenings. Over the course of this two hour event, there will be teachings and meditations, led by Debbie Norris Ph.D., founder of The Mindfulness Center. Dr. Norris is a health scientist who has trained extensively in mind-body therapies along with teaching meditation and training meditation instructors at The Mindfulness Center. Refreshments will be provided.

Dr. Neil Shubin – Finding Your Inner Fish May 25, 6:45pm – 8pm
What do fish fossils tell us about the human body? Ancient fossils, like the Tiktaalik roseae that Dr. Shubin discovered, illustrate the transitional form between fish and land animals. They teach scientists about how our limbs came into being, among other things. But how can scientists predict where to find such transitional fossils? Dr. Shubin will take us from the anatomy laboratory to the Canadian Arctic in search of answers.
