Below is WISH’s bulletin for Fall 2016 Internships. In each posting, you will find qualifications for each internship and application deadlines.



FALL INTERNSHIPS (UNPAID): OFFICE OF SENATOR RON JOHNSON

Senator Ron Johnson’s office is seeking full- and part-time interns for fall 2016. The fall session commences on September 6th, and continues into December. Interns may assist with legislative research, attend committee hearings, conduct Capitol tours, and help with administrative tasks. Duties may be tailored to a student’s career goals and policy interests.

  • A cover letter detailing why you would like to be an intern in Senator Ron Johnson’s office
  • A one-page resume
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • A college transcript (unofficial is acceptable)
  • A writing sample in response to the following prompt:

FALL INTERNSHIPS – OFFICE OF REP. MIMI WALTERS

Rep. Mimi Walters (R-CA) is looking to fill internship positions in her Washington, DC office running from September – December 2016. Candidates should be motivated, detail-oriented, and personable. The ideal candidates will have excellent research and writing abilities, and must be able to interact well with constituents in person and over the phone. Interns will have the opportunity to experience working on Capitol Hill, learn about the legislative process, and attend briefings of interest. In the DC office, responsibilities will include answering the phone, giving tours of the Capitol, assisting with constituent correspondence, and supporting the legislative and communication staff on various projects. Internships are unpaid, but the office is happy to fill out any necessary forms for students to receive credit at their respective college or university. CA ties are preferred, but not required. FALL INTERNSHIPS – OFFICE OF CONGRESSMAN WESTERMAN

Internship – The office of Congressman Bruce Westerman (AR-04) is looking for interns for the 2016 Fall semester (August 22nd-December16th) in our Washington, D.C. office. We are seeking highly qualified candidates that are motivated, detail-oriented, and personable. The ideal candidates will have excellent research and writing abilities, be able to multi-task and interact well with constituents. Interns will have the opportunity to experience working on Capitol Hill, learn about the legislative process, and attend briefings of interest. Responsibilities include answering the phone, giving tours of the Capitol, assisting with constituent correspondence, and supporting the legislative and communication staff on various projects. Although internships are unpaid, our office is happy to fill out any necessary forms for students to receive credit at their respective college or university. FALL INTERNSHIPS – OFFICE OF SENATOR JOHN BOOZMAN

The office of Senator John Boozman is accepting applications for fall 2016 internships in his Washington, D.C. office.  Prospective interns should be responsible, focused, self-motivated, and organized. Duties will include answering phones, giving US Capitol tours, front office administration, processing mail, attending hearings and briefings, as well as assisting staff with research, communications, and/or constituent services projects as needed. This is an excellent opportunity for college students who are interested in the political process and are seeking practical, hands-on experience in a Capitol Hill office. Start and end dates are negotiable.  Internships are unpaid, but academic credit is available for qualifying students.  Candidates must have completed at least two years of undergraduate study and must either be a U.S. citizen or in the U.S. legally.  Arkansas ties preferred but not required.  Those interested should submit applications online at: http://www.boozman.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/internships.  Deadline to apply is August 21, 2016.


FALL INTERNSHIPS – OFFICE OF CONGRESSWOMAN MENG

A NYC Democratic Member of Congress is seeking unpaid interns for the Spring Semester in her Washington, D.C. office. Interns will:

  • Assist in the preparation of constituent responses, memos, bills, and amendments;
  • Perform legislative research;
  • Respond to information requests from constituents;
  • Attend briefings, hearings, and special events where they may have the opportunity to meet with Members of Congress and other leading Washington figures;
  • Assist in sorting incoming mail, greeting visitors, and answering the telephone;
  • Provide tours of the U.S. Capitol.

INTERNSHIPS AT ENVIRONMENTAL AND ENERGY STUDY INSITITUTE

Communications & Policy Internship

Please note that this position is unpaid.  Applications for the Fall 2016 semester will be considered on a rolling basis. Early applications will therefore have an advantage!
Intern Responsibilities

  • Handle EESI’s social media outreach, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts
  • Research and write articles on a broad range of energy, environment, and policy issues for EESI.org.
  • Topics include: climate change, renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable buildings, sustainable communities, sustainable transportation…
  • Research and write articles for our weekly newsletter, Climate Change News
  • Assist with the outreach for and execution of Congressional briefings and events
  • Explore creative ways to engage and expand EESI’s network
  • Research congressional information: bills, current issues, legislation, policy
  • Attend Congressional hearings and other events and brief staff on material covered
  • Data entry and other administrative duties
  • Other responsibilities as required, based on interest areas and Executive Director’s needs. In particular, interns are invited to research and draft fact sheets and issue briefs that will be distributed to the policymaking community

Intern Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree (or degree in progress) in communications, journalism, political science, environmental studies, or a related field. Applicants with media experience or education are preferred. EESI also offers policy-focused internships
  • Interest in environmental and energy issues, with particular enthusiasm for the communication of pertinent information to policymakers and other interested parties
  • Strong writing and research skills
  • Ability to represent EESI professionally at events on Capitol Hill
  • Detail-oriented
  • Self-starter, flexible and able to manage multiple tasks
  • Open to feedback, with strong desire to develop professional skills
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team or independently as needed
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Experience with Photoshop, database, layout and web software, video editing and/or online social media a plus

Internship Application Requirements

This internship requires a commitment of 25-40 hours per week for 10-12 weeks (1 semester), with extensions possible. We prefer full-time commitments. Citizens of any nation may apply, but EESI does not sponsor visas. We offer a friendly, informal and progressive work environment.

Development Internship

Next available position: Winter 2017 semester.

Join EESI as a development intern and learn about all of EESI’s sustainable energy and climate change work, while learning critical research, marketing, writing, and fundraising skills. Work with Director of Development on a wide range of activities to hone your skills.
Potential Intern Activities

  • Research potential funding sources (foundations, corporations, individuals, public sources)
  • Research and summarize variety of sustainable funding issues for use in grant proposals
  • Explore creative ways to increase EESI’s visibility through marketing
  • Contribute to the development of marketing materials (i.e., graphic design, layout) in conjunction with EESI’s Development Director, Communications Coordinator and Communications Interns
  • Work with staff on ways to further engage EESI’s Board of Directors, Board of Advisors and major donors
  • Represent EESI at official EESI briefings and other events
  • Explore grant opportunities and assist with writing, editing, and proofreading of grant proposal on climate, energy, transportation, buildings, and related topics
  • Data entry and donor acknowledgment
  • Other responsibilities as they develop, based on intern interest areas and organization needs

Intern Qualifications

  • Upperclassmen pursuing a bachelor’s degree, recent graduates or students pursuing a master’s degree in marketing, public relations, communications, journalism, politics, nonprofit management, public affairs, environmental studies, or a related field. Career changers are also very welcome.
  • Interest in environmental and energy issues, with particular enthusiasm for the communication of pertinent information to funders and potential funders
  • Graphic design and layout skills a plus
  • Attention to detail
  • Strong writing and research skills
  • Self-starter, flexible and able to manage multiple tasks
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Experience with database software (especially Salesforce) and web software a plus
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team or independently as needed
  • Creativity and openness to expressing new ideas and capacity to produce questions that will further EESI’s mission

Intern for Africa / Fall 2016 (Job #1646)

NED announcement: The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a congressionally funded, private, nonprofit grantmaking organization that works to support freedom around the world. The Africa Department is seeking an Intern to help research on African political systems and to support the Africa grants program.

Position Summary: The Africa department seeks an individual with strong research, writing, communication, and organizational skills who has a demonstrated interest in sub-Saharan Africa and in democracy work in the region. Energetic, creative and flexible team players who take initiatives, prioritize several competing tasks, and work independently are encouraged to apply. The position is based in Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities:
 Conduct research to track political developments throughout Africa;
 Assist in drafting invitation letters, organizing event logistics, note taking, meeting agendas and newsletters;
 Take notes during meetings and draft minutes;
 Attend lectures and roundtable discussions on African policy issues; and,
 Work with other members of the Africa team as requested.

Requirements:
 Candidates must be able to receive academic credit for the internship and therefore must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate-level program in a related field.
 Qualified candidates should have excellent writing skills, strong analytical skills, maintain a strong work ethic and have sharp attention to detail. Students must also have strong computer skills.

Intern, Research & Conferences, International Forum for Democratic Studies / Fall 2016 (Job #1656)

Position Summary:
The International Forum for Democratic Studies (Forum) at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is seeking a motivated individual to serve as a Research and Conferences Intern for the fall 2016. This unpaid internship provides an advanced undergraduate/graduate student with the opportunity to observe the day-to-day operations of a Washington, D.C.-based research center focused on democracy and human rights.
The Forum complements NED’s core mission—assisting civil society groups abroad in their efforts to foster and strengthen democracy—by linking the academic community with activists from across the globe. In addition to its Research and Conferences initiative, the Forum also produces the Journal of Democracy, the world’s leading publication on the theory and practice of democracy, and hosts fellowship programs for international democracy activists, journalists, and scholars.
Responsibilities:
 Provide research support to Forum staff for initiatives relating to a diverse number of topics.
 Attend meetings and take notes on topics related to Forum research initiatives.
 Participate in the drafting, editing, proofreading, and distribution of written materials, including newsletters, event materials, and internal memoranda.
 Help facilitate for Forum events, including panel presentations and roundtable discussions.
 Assist with updating and maintaining Forum contact lists in an organization-wide contact management database.  Other duties, as assigned.
Qualifications:
We are seeking an enrolled undergraduate or graduate school student with:
 A strong interest in the study and support of democracy around the world.
 Strong research ability.
 Experience writing, editing, and proofreading materials.
 Computer software skills including MS Word, Excel, and Outlook; Photoshop, HTML, or database experience a plus.
 The ability to stay organized while handling multiple tasks.

Intern, Grantmaking Resource Center / Fall 2016 — (Job #1658)

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a congressionally funded, private, nonprofit grant making organization that works to support freedom around the world. The Grantmaking Resource Center (GRC)

Position Summary: GRC is currently seeking an intern for fall 2016. The unpaid internship is open to current graduate or undergraduate students. Working on a small team, the intern will play a key role in supporting the institutionalization of learning and best practices in grantmaking through the design and production of modern digital content and learning resources. The internship is a unique opportunity to learn more about an emerging field in development and the administration of grantmaking, as well as build a creative design portfolio. The position is based in Washington, D.C.
Requirements:
 Candidate must be a registered student enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate-level program; and be able to receive college credit or transcript notation of participation in our program for each semester of the internship. An independent study option, if approved by your university is also possible.
 Qualified candidates should have a background in marketing, graphic design, web design, animation, film and video editing or other related discipline; maintain a strong work ethic, and thrive as an independent worker and learner. Students must also have strong multimedia skills.
 Applicants should have an interest in learning and development, creative design, international relations, and/or democracy work.
Duties/Responsibilities:
 Produce infographics and visualizations for learning and best practice job-aids.
 Assist with design elements of redesigning a SharePoint team site.
 Edit raw videos into short-form branded packages for internal audiences.
 Support the coordination of learning opportunities for grantmaking staff as necessary.
Qualifications:
 The internship is open to current undergraduate or graduate students.
 Applicants should have experience with Final Cut or Adobe Premiere video editing software, PowerPoint and Adobe Creative Suite.
 Applicants should have an interest in learning and development, creative design, international relations, and/or democracy work.
 Applicants with graphic design and multimedia skills and background are highly desired.
