Women have played groundbreaking roles in Colombia’s peace process between the government and the country’s largest rebel group, the FARC. With a peace agreement in sight and on the occasion of International Women’s Day, join the U.S. Institute of Peace on March 8 for a briefing on the status of women in peace processes, with a focus on the Colombia case.

Criminal Nature: The Global Security Implications of Illegal Wildlife Trade – Mar 8, 1pm – 5pm
The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) will sponsor a Congressional Forum to examine concrete intelligence-driven approaches to dismantle criminal networks involved in the illicit killing and trafficking of protected animal species: “Criminal Nature: The Global Security Implications of Illegal Wildlife Trade”. The forum, and networking reception immediately following, will be hosted and convened by the American Geographical Society (AGS) in partnership with the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF).

Concerts at Clara’s: Jason Mendelson’s MetroSongs Mar 11, 7pm – 9pm
Bringing together the unlikely combination of music, history, and public transit, Jason Mendelson and a small ensemble of musicians will fill the Missing Soldiers Office with live music in a special performance of “MetroSongs”. Historian Mark Ozer, author of “Washington Metroland”, will accompany the musicians providing historical context about the Metro system.

Legal Restrictions on Thought & Expression in Pakistan, Egypt, & Thailand – Mar 14, 12pm – 2pm
In a number of countries, counter-terrorism, blasphemy, sedition and similar laws are increasingly used to restrict free inquiry and expression, resulting in a shrinking academic and societal space for dialogue. Wrongful prosecutions under these laws not only threaten the well-being of targeted individuals, but undermine the quality of academic work and public discourse and deny everyone in society the benefits of expert knowledge, scientific and creative progress, and free expression.

Join experts in Open Government, technology and the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) in celebrating FOIA’s 50th anniversary and Sunshine Week on Monday, March 14 from 1 – 4:30 pm in the William G. McGowan Theater at the National Archives. The copy of the FOIA signed by President Johnson will be available for viewing before and for the first portion of the event.

In recent years emerging powers such as China, India, Brazil, Turkey and South Africa have played much more prominent roles in international peacekeeping and in providing development and humanitarian assistance to countries in the Global South. One of the least understood dimensions of their growing engagement relates to the assistance they provide to countries affected by conflict and embarking on reconstruction following civil wars.
