National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, DC
Time to say goodbye to the freezing cold and begin to celebrate the arrival of Spring! So, mark your calendars interns, the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, DC has arrived with many exciting festivities beginning March 20th to- April 14th, 2019. What is this festival about, you might ask? The National Cherry Blossom Festival, Inc. is a non- profit organization dedicated to promoting the beauty of nature and international friendship.
There are tons of events that are spring-friendly and will have you out enjoying the great weather that is to come in the DC area. Known as the kick-off to Spring in Washington, The Cherry Blossom Festival opens with the annual Pink Tie Party. This marks the end of winter and the official beginning of blossom season. Opening ceremony to the festival kicks off Saturday, March 23rd with world-renowned performers. You don’t want to miss the North American debut of the “Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon” The Super Live. Do note that the full 80 minutes “Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon” The Super Live show will debut the following day, March 24th, and requires a separate ticket.
Washington’s National Mall serves as the setting for the event Saturday, March 30th. Thousands of kits will take flight during the annual Blossom Kite Flight. Held on the grounds of the Washington Monument, this event is an amazing sight to see. Whether a professional or just beginning, it is a chance to showcase their skill through a variety of competitions and demonstrations, Rokkaku Battles, and the Hot Tricks Showdown.
Petalpalooza will be held on Saturday, April 6th and will feature live music on multiple outdoor stages, a beer garden, all-ages activities, product giveaways, a firework show by Pyrotecnico, and much more along the piers of the Southwest Waterfront. The half-mile-long stretch of The Wharf’s shops and restaurants as the National Cherry Blossom Festival transforms the waterfront community into a one-day-only springtime spectacle. This event is free and fun for all ages. Fireworks show begins at 8:30 PM, but the festivities get started at 12 PM
The National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade is one of DC’s largest spectator events. It is a springtime tradition set against the backdrop of DC’s most iconic landmarks along Constitution Avenue. Helium balloons, floats, marching bands, celebrity entertainers, and performers will all be part of the Parade route seen only once a year during the festival.
WISH will be taking a special part of this year’s festival by hosting a community service day this Saturday, March 20th at the steps of the Jefferson Memorial. A group of WISH interns will be gathering to participate in a clean-up project on the Tidal Basin to make the cherry blossom festival even more beautiful for the community. As the mission of WISH, the main goal is that we give back to our community whenever the opportunity presents itself. Come out and join to be apart of the annual festival that brings our community together.
The 2019 cherry blossom peak bloom period will occur between April 3rd-6th. The best viewing of the cherry blossom trees typically lasts four to seven days after peak bloom begins, but the blossoms can last for up to two weeks under ideal conditions.
