WASHINGTON, DC – The San Diego Comic-Con just wrapped up. It’s an annual event that draws hundreds of thousands of geeks, fans and entertainment executives to the San Diego Convention Center to celebrate and promote pretty much anything and everything in comics and pop culture.

I really don’t know much about it beyond that, but I obviously need to.  Why?

Cause nerds have taken over the world, guys.

For real. I went on a job interview and the recruiter had a Game of Thrones poster on her wall. I said I thought it was really cool.

She then asked me who my favorite character was, as if only a loser wouldn’t watch the show. I was totally being tested. (Note to self: update my Interview Prep Questions app).

So, I acted like I was thinking about it for like a second and then I just howled because I saw a wolf on the show once.

“I love The Hound, too!” she said. And then I just sat there and stared as she talked about The Hound for like 10 minutes as if he was a real guy.  Ice broken. Interview was a success.

#Winning.

But like guys — everyone in the world is a nerd now.   The same world that I’m getting ready to enter. The same world recent grads have already gotten into.

Don’t believe me? Geek is the new cool, bros.  Here are three reasons why.

1. These Are the Best Places to Work.

According to fortune.com, four out of the 10 best places to work in 2014 are:

  • Google – Tech
  • SAS – Tech
  • salesforce.com – Tech
  • Intuit – Tech

In the District, it’s even more telling. Three of the top five companies to work for in DC are all in the tech industry. It’s just like that dude Bill Gates said, “Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one.”

I don’t even think it’s a chance anymore. It’s like, a fact. So be nice to nerds, guys.  Like, don’t be a jerk. #BestAdvice

2. Which is No Surprise, Because These Are the Hottest Majors

According to US News & World Report, the most in demand majors in college right now are:

  • Biometrics – This field teaches students how to build automated identification devices, such as facial recognition systems.
  • Computer Game Design – This sounds rad, actually.
  • Cybersecurity – Also rad.
  • Data Science – Draws from various fields, including math, statistics and computer science.
  • Robotics – This is where students learn how to make the machines that will one day rise up against mankind. It also just so happens that this field is expected to create about 3.5 million new jobs over the next six years.

It’s not too late to change your major. I know I am. (Cybersecurity makes me sound like RoboCop.)

3. And These Are the Top 10 Highest Grossing Movies of All Time

I’ve seen like all of these.  A lot. Except ET. Don’t remember it. Was that the one about that furry alien that ate cats or something? Anyways, these are the movies that have made the most money. At least according to boxofficemojo.com.

  • Avatar – Science Fiction
  • The Avengers – Comic Book
  • The Dark Knight – Comic Book
  • Star Wars Episode I – Science Fiction
  • Star Wars – Science Fiction
  • The Dark Knight Rises – Comic Book
  • ET – Science Fiction
  • The Hunger Games: Catching Fire – Science Fiction

Basically, make a sci-fi or comic book movie. Otherwise, I guess you really are just doing it for the art.

What I’m trying to say is, nerds rule the world, and more importantly, the job market. Put it this way: if The Breakfast Club were made today, the jock would be the loser outcast and the nerd would be the popular kid. That’s why I’m skipping band practice to go get caught up on comic book stuff.

There’s a big Guardians of the Galaxy party Thursday night, and I’m telling you, there’s no better place to network than that.

I need to like, pick a favorite Guardian. That raccoon seems legit.
